In 2023, in addition to the survey's annual longitudinal data, the NSCS has focused on four addtional themes: integrity; the intersection between schools and clubs; disability and casualisation.

Integrity in community sport matters because it's important to have a safe, fair and inclusive sport system. Similarly, clubs' engagement with local schools is important in their ability to attract new members.

Noting that up to a quarter of New Zealanders have a disability, the 2023 survey is also keen to understand how this is facilitated in community sport. And the survey also explores how clubs are promoting themselves to casual (“pay to play”) participants, in addition to full members.
